Bob Graham Round Project

A Photographic Tour of 42 Fells, 66 Miles, and 27,000ft of ascent

Welcome to the heart of the website and in some ways, the central focus of all my photography: the fells that comprise the Bob Graham Round (BGR). At its core the BGR is an old, well-established dash around the core fells of the Lake District that covers 66 miles of mountain terrain, 27,000ft of ascent, and hits 42 summits, all in under 24-hours. What joy!

It takes in the popular fells such as Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Blencathra, and the Scafells, along with lesser know peaks like Great Calva, Calf Crag, and Rossett Pike.

Starting and finishing at the Moot Hall in Keswick the BGR is a run that is steeped in history, it is a challenge that draws in athletes from all over the world, and it’s an undertaking that cannot be taken lightly. The BGR Project that I present here is, at base, a simple photographic tour of the route that covers the whole 66 mile route, in the conventional manner. In other words, going clockwise around the route.

Each leg of the BGR, five in total, is broken down into five smaller sections which include a description of the route, a simple map, and of course images of the specific section. For the most part I am interested in capturing the beauty of the route, and the aesthetic nature of the 42 fells that comprise this, but I also put these images in a logic order which might help novice runners and indeed hikers find their way around the BGR. The images also serve as a good indication of how the terrain of each leg looks. Brief descriptions of each image should also help guide you around the route.

Once I complete the first phase of the BGR Project, by late summer 2024 (the website building phase), I’ll start to shoot athletes on their attempts along with portraits of those who make an official attempt. Hence if you are a fell runner, and would like images of your adventures out on the BGR then please do get in touch as I’d be keen to hear from you. Just to avoid anyone having to ask, I don’t charge anything for this as my goal to simply to record and explore the landscape and lives of those taking on the BGR through photography.

See you out on the fells!
