Arguably the jewel in the crown of the Langdale Valley. It stands higher than is neighbours of Crinkle Crags and Esk Pike along with the Langdale Pikes on the other side of the valley. It might be said that Bowfell has it all. It makes for a wonderful hike in its own right, it has some classic rock climbing routes on Bowfell Buttress, it makes for a great and quick fell run, there is a little bit of scrambling fun to be had on the Great Slab, and it is easily linked to other peaks, thus making it ideal for longer days out on the fells. Add to that, Bowfell offers superb views of the Scafells and is one of the best spots in Lakeland for a sunrise or sunset session. With easy access from the Langdale Valley, and with three pubs waiting for you on your return, there a few better spots in the Lake District.
It is easy to see why it is beloved by so many. This means that it is rare to have the summit to yourself, but the summit plateau is expansive meaning that it is never difficult to find a tranquil spot to enjoy your lunch. Given its height Bowfell’s summit is often shrouded in low cloud, meaning that you might struggle to get a clear view from the upper crags. For a good day of hiking, linking Bowfell with Pike o’ Blisco, Crinkle Crags, Esk Pike, and Rossett Pike is highly recommended. For fell runners, doing this, and adding on the Langdale Pikes is always fun, and completes a full round of the Langdale Valley head.
